Edit, Crop, Photoshop
This event was a crash course hosted by York University Alumni, entailing the rising importance of Adobe Photoshop for all things creative in the world of marketing today. The seminar comprised of two parts. In the first, our workshop hosts provided delegates with valuable hands-on experience in using the program, focusing on creative components such as how to perform layer functions and effective usage of other Photoshop tools. The second part of the event included practical uses of this program at work and tutorials on how to complete such tasks. Finally, delegates were able to network with the guest speakers following the seminar.
Ad Day 2014
A one day advertising crash course held in partnership with Canada’s Next Top Ad Exec. This event bridged the gap between advertising professionals and undergraduates through networking opportunities with 5Crowd, PepsiCo, and many more.
Marketing Intern Panel
In conjunction with the York University Career Centre, students learned more about the Business and Public Administration Internship Program. Students also heard from and had the opportunity to network with past interns from Scotiabank, IBM and ADP.

A “tweetup” designed to be the largest marketing social in the GTA, connecting hundreds of undergraduates, co-organized with the Ryerson Marketing Association.
Alumni Networking Night
To conclude the 2013-2014 academic year, NMSA hosted ‘Alumni Networking Night’, fulfilling an important aspect of our mission, which is to bridge the gap between students and alumni. The event was split into two parts; the first half of the event consisted of a panel of six York graduates sharing insight into their post graduate journeys, job search strategies, and providing students their personal insight into the marketing industry. The line-up included Mark Baltazar (Brand Spark International), Riaz Backer (Rouge Media Group), Valeria Rivera (The National Squash Academy), Anastasia Kedrova (Market Wired), Nicoleta Micle (Invasix), and Nigel De Souza (Campbell’s). During the second half of the event, students were given the opportunity to network with each of these panelists and graduates from the B.A.S. Marketing program.
NMSA's First Annual Case Competition
NMSA entered a strategic partnership with Toys ‘R’ Us during the 2013-2014 year, allowing our annual case competition to provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience via the analysis of a marketing case. All entrants applied academics to practice from the analysis through to the implementation of their recommendations. The top five individuals and teams with the strongest elevator pitches were selected to present their findings to the Vice President of Marketing from Toys ‘R’ Us, Liz MacDonald, accompanied by two additional representatives from the Babies ‘R’ Us team. Of approximately 40 registrants, the winner was presented with a $300 cash prize!
Insight Into Advertising
Hosted by Cristian Mathieu, President of Open, “Insight Into Advertising” was an educational industry insight presentation focusing on the strategic and operations processes which take place in Advertising Agencies. Providing insight into how agencies go from conception to implementation by use of a case-based approach, this was among one of NMSA’s most successful events during the year, which sold out with over 50 undergraduate attendees.
Career Centre Marketing Information Session
An informative information session presented by one of the Career Centre’s Internship program coordinators, Stacey Verhaeghe. Attendees were educated not only in understanding the many services offered by the Career Centre, but mainly the Business and Public Administration Internship Program (BPAIP) which accepts students in their third year undergraduate programs. The BPAIP assists students from the Marketing, Finance, or Management streams in gaining co-op positions in one of many of the Career Centre’s partner companies before graduation.
A sold-out event hosted by Canada’s Next Top Ad Exec (CNTAE), Ad Day is a full-day conference dedicated to educating students about the various aspects of advertising presented by speakers from the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) as well as our partners who included PepsiCo Canada, Chevrolet Canada, and many more. CNTAE’s mission is to establish a bridge between industries and universities by facilitating transfer of knowledge, mentorship, and career opportunities in marketing, strategy, and communications. Opportunities of attending included gaining a glimpse into the world of advertising, ability to network with industry professionals, engagement with elements of advertising, and the learning of ‘trade secrets’. Attendees also received a certificate for completion of a full-day advertising course.
Resume Building Workshop
Co-hosted by the Director of Human Resources and Health and Safety, Julie McCartney, and Liz MacDonald, Vice President of Marketing from Toys ‘R’ Us, this developmental workshop focused on two components in resume writing – hard and soft skills, with an emphasis on craftsmanship. Hard skills included the ability to write a coherent resume and soft skills encompassed interviewing technique and style.

This networking event is a “tweetup” designed to be the largest social gathering by a means of posts on twitter. Hosted at Up Front Bar and Grill in late September of the Fall semester, and the Beer Academy during early January of the Winter term, this event was co-organized by Canada’s leading undergraduate marketing associations including the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce Marketing Association (RCMA), The Marketing Group (TMG) from the University of Toronto Scarborough, the Ryerson Marketing Association (RMA), and York University’s New Marketing Students Association (NMSA). Students spent the course of the evening connecting with like minded business and marketing students from across the GTA.
